  • Incident: On May 5, 2024, Engine 19 experienced a bearing failure on journal no. 4, leading to its shutdown.

  • Assessment: A damage evaluation recommended annealing to reduce hardness and preserve the crankshaft.

  • Overhaul: A major overhaul was initiated earlier than scheduled to minimize downtime.


Repair Process:

  • Teams Involved: NV GEBE's production team collaborated with Wärtsilä's field service team.

  • Timeline: Wärtsilä's team arrived on August 18, 2024, to assist with the overhaul and reconditioning of components.

  • Reassembly: Following component reconditioning, reassembly was completed, leading to the engine's reinstatement.


Impact:

  • Enhanced Capacity: The restoration of Engine 19 contributes an additional 10.5 MW to the power grid.

  • Improved Stability: This enhancement is expected to significantly improve the stability and reliability of electricity supply across St. Maarten.
