Historical Significance of Salt Production

In the 17th and 18th centuries, the Great Salt Pond was central to Sint Maarten's economy. The Dutch West India Company recognized its value, leading to the island's occupation in 1631. Salt extraction became a communal endeavor, with exports primarily reaching North America. However, challenges like unpredictable weather and competition from the Turks Islands often disrupted production.

19th Century Developments

In 1859, A.F. Perrinon initiated an ambitious project to enhance salt production by damming the pond. Subsequent efforts by the Dutch Exploitatie Maatschappij saw intermittent success, but the industry remained vulnerable to external factors.

Transition in the 20th Century

The early 1900s marked a shift as many residents sought employment in the burgeoning oil industries of Curaçao and Aruba. Tourism began to emerge as a new economic pillar, diminishing the island's reliance on salt. By the latter half of the century, parts of the Great Salt Pond were repurposed for urban development, including the expansion of Philipsburg. Some sections became landfill sites, leading to environmental concerns, such as persistent fires affecting air quality.
